The Case for More Pickleball Courts in Laguna Woods Village

As pickleball fever sweeps the nation, Laguna Woods Village (LWV) is no exception. Pickleball has firmly established itself as the third most popular sport in the United States, following closely behind baseball and soccer. Its appeal is universal, attracting players of all ages and skill levels with its unique blend of strategy, athleticism, and social interaction. Here in Laguna Woods, pickleball has not only become a beloved pastime but also a vital part of our community’s social fabric. However, with the sport’s rapid growth, our facilities are struggling to keep up with demand.

Interest Poll for Additional Courts

Starting May 22, 2024, and running through August 30, 2024, the Laguna Woods Pickleball Club is conducting an interest poll to gauge resident support for increasing the number of pickleball courts in our community. This poll is exclusive to LWV residents and is a crucial step in advocating for expanded facilities. Residents can register their support by signing up at lagunawoodspickleball.com under the Events section.

Current Situation and Future Projections

Presently, LWV boasts an estimated 600 pickleball enthusiasts, a number that includes both club members and non-members. These players share just seven courts, which they also share with paddle tennis players. While this arrangement has worked so far, it is becoming increasingly untenable. By 2030, we anticipate the number of pickleball players in Laguna Woods to rise to 900. This significant increase underscores the urgent need for more courts to accommodate our growing community of players.

Why We Need More Courts

  1. Growing Popularity: Pickleball is not just a trend; it is the fastest-growing sport in the country and within our community. The game’s easy-to-learn nature, combined with its physical and social benefits, makes it particularly appealing to our residents.
  2. Health and Wellness: Pickleball offers numerous health benefits, including improved cardiovascular health, better coordination, and increased flexibility. It is a low-impact sport, making it ideal for older adults seeking to stay active and healthy.
  3. Community Engagement: Beyond the physical benefits, pickleball fosters a sense of community. It provides a social outlet where residents can meet, interact, and form lasting friendships. Expanding our facilities will only enhance these social bonds and contribute to a more vibrant community life.
  4. Future-Proofing: By planning for future growth now, we can ensure that LWV remains a top destination for active adults. Investing in more courts will demonstrate our commitment to providing top-notch recreational facilities for current and future residents.

Call to Action

We urge all LWV residents to participate in the interest poll and register their support for additional pickleball courts. This is not just about accommodating a sport; it is about enhancing our community’s quality of life. Your voice matters, and your support can help shape the future of recreational amenities in Laguna Woods.

To register your support, visit lagunawoodspickleball.com and sign up under the Events section. Let’s come together to ensure that our community continues to thrive and that pickleball remains a cornerstone of our active and engaged lifestyle.

Together, we can make a difference. Let’s rally for more pickleball courts in Laguna Woods Village!

There should definately be more pickleball courts. Why not turn one of the tennis courts into 4 pickleball courts.

This is fantastic news! Pickleball has brought so much joy and community spirit to Laguna Woods. More courts will definitely help accommodate the growing number of players and make the sport even more accessible. I’m urging everyone to participate in the poll and support this initiative!

Oh great, just what we need, more courts for a sport that’s stealing space from other activities. How about we think of a balance instead of just catering to the pickleball enthusiasts? Not everyone in this community is into pickleball, you know.

For those who are unaware, pickleball isn’t just a pastime; it’s a comprehensive workout that benefits cardio health, coordination, and flexibility. Plus, it’s an excellent way for older adults to stay active without the high impact of other sports. More courts could significantly improve our community’s wellness.
