Laguna Woods Resident Builds Bridges Amid Diversity

As Laguna Woods Village grows increasingly diverse, not all changes have been met with open arms. Amidst incidents of bias and discrimination, a group called the Community Bridge Builders has risen, led by visionary resident Rebeca Gilad. This assembly of diverse villagers aims to transform challenges into opportunities for unity and understanding.

Inspiration Through Adversity

The genesis of the Community Bridge Builders was marked by two disturbing events in 2022: a mass shooting at a nearby church and a public display of hate within the village itself. These incidents prompted Gilad to ponder deeply about community cohesion. Collaborating with like-minded residents, she envisioned a group that could foster genuine connections across different backgrounds, hoping to turn casual neighbors into friends and allies.

A Melting Pot of Voices

Rebeca Gilad gathered a dynamic group from various ethnic, religious, and cultural factions within the village to tackle prejudice through open dialogue, educational initiatives, and cultural exchanges. This group includes leaders from multiple community clubs and religious organizations, all united under the banner of advocating for a respectful and inclusive community.

Educational Outreach and Cultural Integration

Under Gilad’s leadership, the Community Bridge Builders have organized numerous seminars and workshops aimed at addressing the roots and repercussions of bias. These sessions also focus on proactive measures to prevent discrimination and strategies to handle such incidents effectively, promoting a culture of respect and understanding.

Celebrating Unity Through Action

In April 2023, the group’s efforts culminated in its official recognition as a registered village club, boasting 260 members and growing. The diverse membership is continually expanding, drawing people from various races and cultures, reflecting the evolving demographics of the community.

Rebeca Gilad: A Lifetime of Bridging Gaps

Rebeca’s background is as diverse as her ambitions. Born in Mexico City to Holocaust survivors, she grew up amid a tapestry of languages and cultures. Despite facing anti-Semitic taunting as a child, she found solace and expression in dance and eventually pursued higher education in history and journalism. Her journey led her from Mexico to Israel and finally to the United States, where she transitioned her career to focus on public health and gerontology, influenced by her rich life experiences and the injustices she witnessed.

A Future of Inclusivity

Today, Gilad is a prominent voice in the village, hosting the local TV show “Did You Know,” which sheds light on the village’s cultural diversity. Her commitment to social justice is palpable, from her involvement in the Democratic Club to leading anti-hate rallies.

Enduring Commitment to Social Justice

Rebeca’s unwavering dedication to fostering an inclusive community is echoed by her colleagues and supporters, including city council members and club leaders who praise her passion and commitment to making Laguna Woods a welcoming place for all.

A Continuing Legacy

The Community Bridge Builders, under Rebeca Gilad’s guidance, continue to inspire and effect change, proving that even in times of division, unity is possible. Her work not only builds bridges but also fortifies them, ensuring that Laguna Woods remains a beacon of hope and camaraderie.
